Principal Technician (ICT Systems) 

Duties and responsibilities

ICT systems and user support

  • Install, maintain and repair information and communication technology systems.
  • Configure hardware and software, manage computers and network devices, troubleshoot technical issues, and provide support to end users.
  • Help ensure data security and system reliability.
  • Work with departments to understand their technology needs and recommend improvements to the ICT infrastructure.

Software configuration

  • Assist with designing, verifying, documenting, amending and refactoring moderately complex software configurations for deployment.
  • Apply agreed standards and tools, and take part in reviews of work with others.

System software

  • Monitor resource usage and failure rates to inform system software tuning.
  • Apply system software parameters to improve throughput and efficiency.
  • Install and test new versions of system software.
  • Help prepare implementation procedures, including fallback contingency plans.

Network support

  • Perform agreed network maintenance and specified operational configuration of network components.
  • Diagnose network faults using the required troubleshooting methods and tools.
  • Use network management tools to collect agreed performance and traffic statistics.

Installation, removal and deployment

  • Install or remove hardware and software using supplied instructions and tools, including handover to the client.
  • Test installations with standard procedures and diagnostic tools, correct problems, and document the results.
  • Record all components installed or removed.
  • Assist users, follow agreed procedures for further help or escalation, and contribute to installation procedures and standards.
  • Use approved deployment tools and techniques; record activities, log results and document technical work.

AirC2 service operations

  • Provide 24/7 immediate on-call Level 2 technical AirC2 support to Service Operations. Ticket responses and resolutions must meet current operational needs and defined KPIs.
  • When not on call, work on site as an integrated member of the assigned service team.
  • Help design, develop, test and support engineering changes to services, processes, the organisation and operating model. This work may be required in addition to daily operations and maintenance tasks.

Requirements

Essential education and experience

  • Higher vocational training in a relevant discipline and 3 years of post-related experience, or a secondary educational qualification and 5 years of post-related experience.
  • At least 3 years of practical experience implementing and maintaining ICT end systems in a large organisation.
  • Good experience configuring hardware and software.
  • Good understanding of ICT systems and the ability to solve problems independently.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting technical issues and supporting end users.

Desirable experience and skills

  • Network configuration and troubleshooting involving TCP/IP, VPN, VLAN, firewalls and DNS.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity infrastructure.
  • Software development in Java, C, C , Python or a scripting language.
  • Configuration of server hosting platforms, custom disk configurations and storage controllers, RAID, and redundancy management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in remote server administration, log analysis and use of network tools such as Wireshark.
